University Graduate

Posted by Marj (Thunder Bay, Canada) on 9 September 2014 in People & Portrait.

Trifonia failed her final year of secondary school and her parents were furious. It was a great economic sacrifice for the family to pay for schooling and when she failed they felt their money had been wasted. Trifonia would work on the farm instead of returning to school. She was devastated and after a year helping her parents on the farm she was allowed to go to night school. Not only did she pass but the principal offered her work teaching as an 'intern' at primary schools in rural communities. For the next 6 years she worked saving all her money. With her savings and help from her parents she enrolled in university and got her teaching degree. She was the first woman to graduate from university in her community. As Trifonia says 'I am a secretary, teacher and principal in my own one room school. She fought for her education and profession and now she is inspiring her students to be all that they can be.
